This seems to question the quality of the book (e.g. "It's a good book, maybe too long").

I've always thought the translation would be something like "What kind of book are you reading?" This seems to question the kind/type/genre of book (e.g. "It's a 200-page, mystery novel written for adults").

Does Croatian make such a distinction? Or could it be answered either way? Thanks!

Replies

Daniel N. 3/9/15 09:49

Well Google just ate by quite long answer :(

To summarize, "kakvu knjigu čitaš" would be kind/type/genre. You can also ask about impressions, what impression does someone have:

"kakva je knjiga (koju čitaš)?"

or even more specifically (but colloquially)

"kakva ti je knjiga (koju čitaš)?"

these questions would be likely answered by "boring", "quite interesting", "not what I had expected", and so on - exactly what you wanted. But it's *subjective* opinion.

I hope this helps, don't hesitate to ask ANY question! br Daniel

Daniel N.3/9/15 13:38

I have clarified it, I agree it wasn't really a great explanation, I think it's better now. Could you answer with something like "Od moje sestre.", since you can't really turn "moja sestra" into a possessive adjective?

Replies

Daniel N. 17/6/17 00:51

Yes, you can say od moje sestre, but as I wrote earlier, such use of od to indicate possession is colloquial. The standard responses would be just a genitive phrase (moje sestre), or a possessive adjective (sestrina).

In the real life, you will hear od moje sestre very often.

lp
DeleteDaniel N.https://www.blogger.com/profile/14585410511935134909noreply@blogger.com
